I am in a 14 team keeper league and have been offerred Nick Markakis for Max Scherzer. We are allowed to keep 14 players and with Markakis i would be keeping my entire hitting lineup (9 hitters) I would still have 5 pitching spots left to fill and have the likes of CC, Lackey, Sheets, Jered Weaver, Johny Cueto, Oliver Perez and Brett Myers.

My thoughts on accepting this is that
A) who knows if Scherzer will start again (i don’t like wasting keepers on closers as too unreliable)
B) hitters are more valuable keepers than pitchers
C) Markakis is only 24 and very underrated

My thoughts against are
A) i would not be able to look for breakout hitters or draft any hitters next year as my roster is set
B) i would be replacing Hawpe who is back in 2 weeks and be tough to trade Hawpe as cold and every team only needs 3 OF’s
C) Scherzer could be dominatiing

Thoughs?

2 things. i wouldn’t do scherzer for markakis straight up. i think markakis will hit about 25 HR, drive in a little over 100, and steal about 18-24 bases. so a legit 25-100-20 guy. so unless scherzer can develop into a top tier closer or a high second tier pitcher, it wouldn’t be worth it.

i think scherzer will be a good #3 starter next year, but there’s always questions about how a pitcher develops. you have 14 keepers so i might use a spot on scherzer, BUT i wouldn’t deal markakis for him.

the i would definitely do it. i would deal hawpe when he comes back. he’ll have a hot week or 2 so his value will rise noticably then so deal him then for a pitcher you’d want to keep.
